LASIK / PRK Surgery

Refractive Eye Surgery

This type of surgery is used to treat vision errors on the cornea, eliminating the need for glasses or contacts. Over the years, there have been many advances in refractive surgery. We now have the ability to take detailed mapping of your eye(s) before surgery, allowing for better outcomes. Spokane Eye Clinic is home to the most advanced eye mapping technology

LASIK

LASIK is a very common surgery performed using a laser to treat myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. The LASIK procedure reshapes the cornea, enabling images entering the eye to be properly focused onto the retina, resulting in clearer vision. LASIK surgery is essentially pain-free and takes only about 15 minutes for both eyes. The result is improved vision without eyeglasses or contact lenses.

PRK

At Spokane Eye Clinic, our surgeons perform a similar surgery to LASIK called PRK (photorefractive keratectomy).  Like LASIK and other types of laser eye surgery, PRK works by reshaping the cornea. While LASIK is a more recognizable name for refractive surgery, PRK has been performed longer and continues to have more stable results than LASIK surgery. There are many other advantages of PRK surgery vs LASIK:

  • Ability to treat many patients who did not qualify for LASIK (thin cornea, high myopia, allergies, military, occupation/activities)

  • No flap-related complications

  • Fewer complaints about side effects such as glares and halos

  • Few enhancements and touch-ups are needed
