Graves Disease

Hyperthyroid

Graves' Disease is one of the most common of all thyroid problems and typically has no long-term adverse health consequences if proper medical care is received promptly.

One of the possible symptoms of Graves' Disease is inflamed and swollen eye muscles and tissues that can cause the eyeballs to protrude from their sockets. Only a small percentage of Graves' patients experience this condition called exophthalmos, though. Exophthalmos may cause your eyes to feel ache, dry, and irritated. Your eyes may be red and tear regularly, which could be because your eyelids no longer close all the way.

Severe cases of exophthalmos are rare but could lead to partial blindness, limited ability to control eye movement, or double vision.

Exophthalmos does not necessarily begin with the onset of Graves' Disease, and it does not correlate with its severity.
