Dr. Smit joined Spokane Eye Clinic in the summer of 2004. Prior to joining our staff, she practiced as an ophthalmologist in Portland, Oregon and in Seattle Washington. She also served as a Clinical Instructor at Oregon Health Science University and serves currently as a clinical Instructor for the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Dr. Smit graduated from the University of Washington Medical School with Honors and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. She completed her Residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Washington Medical Center. After Fellowship training at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, she practiced with Glaucoma Consultants Northwest.
She is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and currently serves as an Examiner for the Board. She is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Washington Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
Prior to her work in medicine, Dr. Smit was a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Washington working in the fields of horticulture, plant physiology and plant molecular biology. She has numerous published papers in the field of plant biology and horticulture.
Dr. Smit's area of specialty includes medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma and cataracts as well as general ophthalmology.
